Sydney
March 6 - March 9
We left Manila on Tuesday March 6 on the Philippine Airlines flight to Sydney and arrived in Sydney around noon on March 7. We took a cab to our hotel and rested first. Our hotel was located in Manly Bay which is a very nicely located suburb of Sydney with an excellent surfing beach. We had our first Fish & Chips and had a quick look around before resting.
The next day we took the ferry to the Sydney central business district (CBD). The ferry ride was beautifull and gave us a good idea of what greater Sydney looks like. Arring at the CBD is quite spectacular as you ride past the Sydney Opera House with the great backdrop of the Sydney skyline.
We met up with Kathy the girlfriend of Stevey, a cousin of Nona. She lives and works in Sydney so she was a great local guide to show us the highlights. After checking out the Opera House from closer by she took us to the botanical gardens which are a huge park in the center of the city. It is a really beautifull park with a great variety in plant life. We then had lunch at the wharf and went around the city.
In Manly we decided to go out and have a look around to see how the Aussies go out. We went to a pretty hip bar where they had some nice live music and a nice mixture of surf dudes and dudettes combined with preppy youngsters and people that looked like they were students. In general Manly is a rich suburb where mostly hard working business men live with their families. We definitely loved the place and it would be great place to raise kids.
On our last day in Sydney we took the ferry to the CBD again and took the overnight train from Sydney to Brisbane. It was a long train ride and surely a unique experience but the train was quite squeeky and we did not get to sleep much. Philip was so bored and awake that he spent a lot of time going to the restaurant cart a lot and that is where he discovered the English style meat pies that are very popular in both Australia and New Zealand.
